The Āyurvedic Kitchen

Wisdom from the Indian Kitchen

Hi and welcome to my website. You probably want to know more about the person who is making all the stuff and giving you the Āyurvedic info. My name is Ushma Williams and I live in London. I am originally from India where I grew up and was educated.

I come to you with many years of culinary experience but my forte is in the classical cooking of India which follows the principles set out by Ayurveda. I learnt all this from two previous generations of the women in my family and hope I will be able to pass on that legacy for the future generations.

My father taught me the principles of Āyurvedic knowledge and practice alongside its sister philosophy of Yoga. I went back to formal education after being a mother and wife for over eighteen years by getting my degree in Sanskrit from SOAS.

Meanwhile my passion for philosophy took me in the direction of teaching Hindu Philosophy and Ethics to secondary and primary school students, as well as setting up, and running a course with the WEA in London. Over the years I have done many workshops and courses teaching both Philosophy and Āyurvedic Cooking.

I have also worked at the British Library on their two major India exhibitions - Ramayana and Mughals, and the V&A, as  workshop leader and devised tours of the exhibitions for the general public.

I do hope you will be able to draw some inspiration from this site and have learnt a little bit more about Ayurveda. Its a wonderful body of knowledge and carries with it, years of collective experience and wisdom of India.

"from food are born all creatures. Food is the chief of all things, the universal medicine"
